Most everyone appreciates a meaningful story. This is ours.
In the early 1900s, Zartik Sarabian and Levon Ajamian immigrated to the United States, fleeing the Armenian Genocide. They first settled in New York City before establishing roots in Belle Mead, New Jersey. At the corner of Amwell Road, they built a home, raised seven children, and operated a loom rug factory that became the foundation of their family’s livelihood.
At the center of what is now the 438 (Amwell Pharmacy) shopping center still stands the house where James Pasquale Ajamian was born in 1932 which was the neighbor to the family home. The family home on the corner of route 206 an Amwell road served not only as a residence but also as a hub of hard work and perseverance. Like many children of immigrant families, James left school after the 7th grade to contribute to the family business.
Over time, the family’s entrepreneurial spirit expanded throughout the community. It is believed they once owned multiple properties along Route 206, stretching from Amwell Road to New Amwell Road. Members of the next generation went on to establish their own businesses, including Petrocks by Lucy Ajamian-Petrock, gas stations and a lawn mower repair shop by Leo Ajamian, a diner located where 7-Eleven now stands by Virginia Ajamian-Parks, and commercial properties developed into what is now known as JPA Plaza by James P. Ajamian.
While many of the properties were eventually sold to support the family, the values of hard work, generosity, and community endured. James P. Ajamian was widely known for his kindness and willingness to help others. At his funeral, a stranger shared a lasting sentiment: “Your father was the kind of person who would give the shirt off his back to help others.”
Today, we are proud to continue that legacy. Through supporting small businesses, hosting community-focused events, and fostering strong relationships with our tenants, we remain committed to giving back and strengthening the community we serve.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all tenants, customers, vendors, and event participants—past and present—who have been part of this journey.
